In your technical paper you use a field strength of 0.1T as the inducing field to create the magnetic dipole in a vehicle. Have you given any consideration to the safety implications of this? Guidelines for cardiac pacemakers stipulate they should not be submitted to a field stronger than 0.0005T, and credit cards, watches and computers should not be exposed to field strengths greater than 0.001T
I can not imagine that the strength of magnetic field you would be permitted to use in reality would make this a commercially viable proposal.

I am one of the engineers at MagKinetics. It is true that the credit cards and laptops are not supposed to be exposed to such large magnetic fields. In this case, the fields are shielded by the body of the vehicle and dont reach the inside of the vehicle. So we think that it is a safe application. Thank you.

I had expected that you would point field cancellation inside a hollow body - however you need to consider the fact that not all road users are hollow metal bodies - motorcycles for instance would be afforded no such protection meaning that their users would be vulnerable to magnetic interference with watches and credit cards and more importantly cardiac pacemakers. In this instance the rider could be exposed to a magnetic field several hundred times stronger than safety legislation permits.

Many thanks for your reply. How are these sensors able to distinguish between different motor vehicles? How could they differentiate between a convertible, where the magnetic field will not be cancelled inside, and a standard car? How can you also differentiate between standard vehicles and cars made of composite materials such as the Smart car (which would still have a metal engine but not have the field cancelling properties of a metal framed vehicle)? Feel free to get technical, I\'m a physicist.
Your technology seems aimed at areas of roads where traffic natural slows such as off ramps and interchanges - areas where traffic bunches up. How do your sensors pick up on motorcycles when they are overtaking/undertaking slower moving traffic as they move through your system?
I also have a question about the nature of the magnetic field you use to induce the dipole in the vehicles. Is the field a direct magnetic field, i.e. the N-S dipole alignment is maintained as the vehicle traverses your invention, or does the magnetic field alternate as the vehicle progresses? (i.e. N-S-N-S-N polar arrangement in the road).
Do you have any feel for what the cost of the system is likely to be in $/MW?
